PIPING LIVE IN GOURMET GLASGOW!

As one of Europe’s Cultural Capitals, you’ll always find Glasgow an eventful experience. However this August promises to be especially eventful as the city focuses on two major festivals – Piping Live! Glasgow International Piping Festival and Gourmet Glasgow Food and Drink Festival – showcasing Glasgow’s cultural and culinary excellence.

Glasgow welcomes a global celebration of the diversity of piping music from 7 – 13 August, as more of the world's best and emerging pipers descend upon the city for the third year of Piping Live!, the Glasgow International Piping Festival.

For one week across various different venues and outdoor spaces, this uniquely Scottish event will stage the best that international piping has to offer with more than two dozen different nationalities represented as well as a host of diverse piping traditions showcased.

Last year, audience figures exceeded 25,000 and more than 5,000 pipers performed at venues across the city.  This year’s programme includes the best in home grown talent, as well as pipers from further afield, including Spain, Bulgaria, France, the US and Ireland.

The programme will feature festival favourites including the Celtic Piping Night that has played host to huge names such as Fred Morrison and Kathryn Tickell, the Contemporary Piping Night which will again deliver some of today’s raw and edgiest piping talent as well as the Street Café the Come & Try sessions and the Festival Club.

In addition to Piping Live!, Glasgow’s celebration of piping music ends on the highest of notes when Glasgow Green once again hosts the spectacular World Pipe Band Championships on August 12.  Celebrating the very best of Scottish culture, music and dance, this annual major event showcases pipe bands competing for the honour of being crowned World Champion 2006.

The highlight event will be at the Old Fruitmarket from Friday 18 – Sunday 20 August featuring celebrity and local chef demonstrations and exhibition stalls.  Chefs confirmed for this year’s festival include Jean-Christophe Novelli and Italian chef Aldo Zilli.

The Festival will feature the Dine Around Glasgow promotion, offering special set menus for a value fixed price of just £15 at participating bistros, restaurants and eateries throughout the city.

In addition, Glasgow Restaurateurs Association member restaurants will also be holding special events within their premises during the Festival –including themed dinners, cookery demonstrations and wine tasting.
