Awards ceremony celebrates Glasgow’s style

Actors James McAvoy and Katie Leung were among the winners as Glasgow’s most stylish individuals, businesses and venues were rewarded for their creative endeavors at this year’s stunning Scottish Style Awards.
 
In a glittering ceremony at the Old Fruitmarket, tastemakers from across the city were honoured by a trendsetting panel of judges which included supermodel and style icon, Elle Macpherson. 
 
Scotstoun born actor James McAvoy, won the Most Stylish Male Award after enjoying critical and popular acclaim since starring in the Oscar winning Last King of Scotland and was recently seen alongside Keira Knightley in Atonement.  
 
Katie Leung, winner of the Most Stylish Female category, shot to global fame as Harry Potter’s love interest, Cho Chang, in the big-screen adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s novels.  The 20-year old from Motherwell has been making waves thanks to her youthful and quirky personal style and is currently being courted some of the world’s leading fashion houses.
 
Glasgow’s style conscious set had further cause to celebrate as Aimee McWilliams scooped the coveted Scottish Fashion Designer of the Year Award.  McWilliams, who recently received glowing praise for her forthcoming collection at London Fashion Week, has been marked as one to watch by the fashion industry and looks certain to mirror the success of fellow Glasgow designer Christopher Kane, who won the award in 2006.
 
Some of Glasgow’s most stylish venues and businesses were also recognised at the awards ceremony. 
 
Winner the Most Stylish Hotel Award, Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens has recently undergone a lavish refurbishment which has meant that this already covetable abode in the leafy west end of the city, is more desirable than ever.
 
Glasgow’s café culture has been resplendent in recent years and the when the announcement came that The Cupping Salon at Fifi and Ally won Most Stylish Café, many a macchiato was raised in their honour.  Located high above the bustling throng of shoppers in Princes Square, this elegant, contemporary take on the Glasgow tearoom serves everything from great cakes to champagne and fine wines.
 
Designer jewellery house Brazen, was awarded Most Stylish Boutique.  The premises, located in the heart of Glasgow’s Merchant City, is as eye-catching and unique as the distinctive designs and accessories showcased around the store.
 
West end favourite, Kember and Jones, picked up the award for Most Stylish Food & Wine Retailer.  This vibrant deli on Byres Road has an intriguing interior filled with painted tongue and wood panelling, pale oak and intricate glass.  Hand baked bread spills from wicker baskets while the main counter has an array of indulgent cakes and true gourmet treats.
 
Commenting on the awards ceremony, which was held on Friday 26 October, Bailie Liz Cameron, Vice-Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said:  “Glasgow is known as a place where exciting and stylish things happen. We are thrilled to have hosted the Scottish Style Awards again and I’m sure that events such as this add that extra bit of sparkle to the autumn / winter season.”
