Christmas shopping in Glasgow is the most satisfying in Britain outside London, according to new research from Yellow Pages, which identifies the best UK regions for retail therapy.
More than 2,000 people across Britain were surveyed* about their festive shopping habits to reveal the shops and services deemed most crucial for creating the perfect Christmas, such as gift shops and farmers’ markets.
Yellow Pages’ data analysts then ranked people’s preferences and matched them using a weighting system against the number of relevant shops or services listed in each area directory.
This “Christmas Shopping Formula**” identified the 2007 top ten locations for the ultimate seasonal shopping experience as follows:
Glasgow, Exeter, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Brighton, Cardiff, Norwich, Chester, Preston and Bristol.
This research follows hot on the heels of Glasgow’s Buchanan Street being named the UK’s finest shopping street by the Academy of Urbanism – ahead of London’s Regent Street and O’Connell Street in Dublin.
Key criteria for the ‘Great Street’ accolade, awarded to this celebrated Glasgow thoroughfare last month, included local character, distinctiveness, user-friendliness, and commercial success.
Scott Taylor, Chief Executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, commented, “These two accolades underline Glasgow’s undisputed status as the top retail centre in Britain outside London. And when you consider the throngs of people you might encounter on Oxford Street or Bond Street at this time of year, a half-mile sweep down Buchanan Street seems so much more civilized.
“That’s the beauty of shopping in Glasgow. We have giant malls, high street stores, designer boutiques and specialist outlets, all in a compact walkable space, made all the more special at Christmas time by a feast of festive events.”
- Ends – Friday 7 December

Note to Editors:
*Survey of 2194 UK adults carried out by YouGov, 20th-22nd November 2007.
** The Christmas formula is the “Christmas Score” for each area, incorporating 20 separate Christmas related shops/services. Each shop/service is measured on: (importance of shop/service according to survey) x (quantity of shop/service in book area). Eg. AnyTown Gift shops (20 x 138 = 2760) + Lingerie (9 x 159 = 1431) + Toy shops (19 x 25 = 475) + Butchers (19 x 244 = 4636) and so on = final “Christmas Score”. Areas are then ranked against each other to create the top ten.
Please note that importance of shop/service is based on the results of the YouGov survey of 2194 UK adults.
Yellow Pages data experts excluded London and London suburbs directories from the study to discover the shopping hotspots of the UK outside the capital city.
