World Irish Dancing Championships Make a Welcome Return to Glasgow

Councillor Alex Mosson, Chairman of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau joins Irish dancers Ronan McCutcheon and Suzanne Coyle in George Square to announce the return of the World Irish Dancing Championships - Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne - to Glasgow in April 2007.

Suzanne from Glasgow and Ronan from Ayrshire were both crowned World Champions in the 15 – 16 year old boys and girls categories at this year’s competition in Belfast and will once again represent Scotland when the event takes place at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall from April 1-8, 2007.

This is only the second time the Championships have been held outside Ireland (they were previously held in Glasgow in 2002) and with 4,000 competitors and up to 12,000 supporters expected to attend, local economic benefit is estimated at more than £8m.

Francis Curley, Chairman of the Organising Committee, said: “The genuine warmth and hospitality we received from the City of Glasgow at the 2002 event coupled with Scotland and Ireland’s strong cultural links led to the decision to locate the Championships in Glasgow again in 2007.”

Councillor Alex Mosson, said: “The World Irish Dancing Championships is an extremely prestigious and colourful event and we are delighted that Glasgow has been chosen to host it once again.  We look forward to working with the organising committee to ensure we build on the success of 2002.”
