Whisky is the world’s best-selling spirit is arguably one of Scotland’s greatest contributions to civilisation. The first mention of whisky production is in 1494 when Friar John Cor was making aqua vitae – the water of life. Today, there are almost 100 distilleries producing either the famed single malts so beloved of connoisseurs or highly popular blends, and many are open to the public for tours and tastings. Whisky production is normally divided into four areas.
The greatest concentration of distilleries is in Speyside, which produces whiskies of great elegances and complexity, including the world’s best selling malt, Glenfiddich. Highland whiskies come in a variety of flavours reflecting the purity of the water and the rugged, heathery landscape. Islay is famed for the deep, peaty flavours of its malts which are flavoured by the wild seas around. There are just three lowland distilleries, producing whiskies which are usually softer and mellower than those in the rest of Scotland.
Strike out on your own to visit your favourite distillery or take an organised tour to give you a taste of a region – but make sure you don’t leave Scotland before enjoying the warm glow of a dram.
